On the eve of his transition to middle school, thirteen-year-old Isaac Strawbridge's life is turned upside down when the words "Mom has cancer" are uttered. His parents, Dad and Mom, and his younger sister, Sammie, all grapple with this devastating news in their own ways.

Isaac's sole refuge becomes Shelly Park, where he escapes to hone his basketball skills, driven by the dream of making the school team. It is here that he encounters an unexpected mentor, Mr. Brooks, a towering 6'8" local legend with a cane-assisted gait. Mr. Brooks is eager to impart his basketball wisdom, and Isaac soon discovers that the old man's past is shrouded in a secret – a storied NBA career that had once brought him fame and fortune, only to ultimately lead to his downfall and isolation.
